TROY, Mich. — Paul Longo spent 29 years as a college football strength and conditioning coach, most recently at Notre Dame.
He's now blind, and out of football.
Longo grew up in Sterling Heights and returned home for a homecoming dinner this week. He knew he'd spend time with old teammates. What he didn't realize was the surprise they had put together for their friend.
Over Christmas, Longo's pals noticed something was missing from his collection of helmets compiled from stops at different schools throughout his career.
He needed a helmet from his alma mater, Wayne State.
Tuesday night in Troy, surrounded by people he's known for decades, Longo heard another familiar voice. It belonged to Paul Winters, the head coach of Wayne State's football team. He didn't come empty-handed.
