Gardenhire: We view low expectations as a challenge

The Tigers have heard it.

They've seen it.

According to the pundits, they aren't going to be very good.

Funny thing about that is that they feel they should have a say in that characterization of the 2018 version.

"All the smart people in the world and their computers spit out that we suck, go for it. We take that as a challenge, all baseball players do. We'll see what happens, they may be right, they may be wrong, we're going to try and prove them wrong," Tigers manager Ron Gardenhire said.

"Whether we're predicted to lose 100 games or win 100 games, I think our expectations as individuals remain the same, I truly feel that if we go out and take care of business we'll surprise a few people along the way," catch James McCann added.

For almost a decade, the Tigers we're viewed as a playoff contender annually, and a World Series selection for about half of them.

But most of the big names and contracts are gone, leaving behind a shell of the star power behind, which may not be such a bad thing for a young developing team.

"There's definitely no pressure, we're just going out and playing the game we've played our whole life and we don't have that big target on our back this year, and I think it's going to help a lot of guys including myself," pitcher Jordan Zimmerman said.
