HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL FINALS: Detroit King repeats as Division 2 champion

DIVISION 2: DETROIT MARTIN LUTHER KING 18, WALLED LAKE WESTERN 0

DETROIT (AP) -- Jesse Scarber and Jae-Veyon Morton each returned interceptions for touchdowns, helping Detroit Martin Luther King beat Walled Lake Western 18-0 in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 state final.
   
Scarber's pickoff return Friday afternoon at Ford Field in Detroit covered 56 yards in the third quarter, giving the Crusaders a 12-0 lead. Morton returned his interception 66 yards in the fourth quarter.
   
King quarterback Dequan Finn passed for 68 yards, including a 9-yard touchdown to Ambry Thomas in the second quarter. King (12-2) won its second consecutive Division 2 title and third overall.
   
Johnny Tracy passed for 70 yards and Jamon Benson had 27 yards rushing for Walled Lake Western (12-2). The Warriors finished with 124 yards of total offense and turned the ball over four times on interceptions.
   
The Crusaders suffered both their losses this season to Division 1 power Detroit Cass Tech, which advanced to Saturday's state final against Detroit Catholic Central.
 
 
DIVISION 4: GRAND RAPIDS CATHOLIC CENTRAL 10, DETROIT COUNTRY DAY 7
 
DETROIT (AP) -- Michael Brown caught a 44-yard go-ahead touchdown in the fourth quarter and Antonio Strong had a crucial interception in Grand Rapids Catholic Central's 10-7 victory over Detroit Country Day in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 final Friday night.
   
Trailing 7-3, Brown caught a 20-yard pass over the middle from Jack Bowen and broke away from Country Day defenders to score with 11:11 left.
   
Strong's interception with 3:11 remaining, which he returned 35 yards to the Country Day 15-yard line, helped seal the win at Ford Field in Detroit.
   
The Cougars (13-1) won their third overall state title and first since 2010, despite finishing with 60 yards of total offense and an MHSAA record-low one first down.
   
Country Day (13-1) scored on Roy McCree's 82-yard interception return in the second quarter, giving the Yellowjackets a 7-3 lead. Quarterback Steve Mann threw for 87 yards, but Country Day could muster only 113 yards of total offense.

 

DIVISION 8: MUSKEGON CATHOLIC CENTRAL 35, OTTAWA LAKE WHITEFORD 6

DETROIT (AP) -- Freshman Cameron Martinez has scored two touchdowns in leading Muskegon Catholic Central to a 35-6 victory over Ottawa Lake Whiteford in the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 8 state championship.
   
Martinez rushed for 154 yards and one score, while passing for 61 yards with another touchdown Friday at Ford Field in Detroit.
   
LaTommy Scott ran for 69 yards and Logan Helton finished with 67 yards rushing and two touchdowns for the Crusaders (14-0), who won their fourth consecutive state title and sixth overall since the MHSAA went to eight divisions in 1999.
   
Thomas Eitniear rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown and passed for 96 yards for Ottawa Lake Whiteford (13-1), which was seeking its first Division 8 title.
   
Holding a 7-6 halftime lead, the Crusaders scored twice in the third quarter to open a comfortable advantage. Helton's 26-yard touchdown run made it 14-6 and Martinez scored on a 5-yard run for a 21-6 edge.
   
Eitniear scored on an 81-yard run in the second quarter to get the Bobcats within 7-6. Catholic Central's defense pitched a shutout the rest of the way.
