(WXYZ) — A group of mayors from cities where several Big Ten schools are sent a letter to the Big Ten Conference asking them for additional safety measures before the start of the football season this week.

The mayors are requesting the conference work with local and county health officials in those cities to define positive positivity rates which it is no longer safe to host a football game due to increased activity like social gatherings and alcohol consumption that comes with games.

They are also asking the conference to release game times and schedules as soon as possible, and make it a priority to host less or no games in the evening or late afternoon.

It was signed by several mayors, including Mayor Aaron Stephens from East Lansing, Mayor Andy Schor from Lansing and Mayor Christopher Taylor from Ann Arbor.

“While we all appreciate our college and university sports programs and the economic and community benefits that they provide, the COVID-19 crisis is far from over and we are expecting some potential new obstacles as a result of the upcoming football season,” Stephens said in a release. “We hope that by continuing to work with our individual colleges and universities, our public health officials and the Big Ten Conference, we can be as prepared as possible for the return of football in our communities.”
