(WXYZ) — The Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) announced the finals for 11-player football teams will be held at Ford Field in downtown Detroit.

A limited number of 500 fans, 250 from each team, will be allowed to watch the games from inside the stadium.

"That includes the families of the participants it doesn't include bands," MHSAA spokesperson John Johnson said. "It's going to be bare-bones, but for the teams and families, it's the best possible experience we can give them."

On Friday, the state reported a daily record of positive COVID-19 cases with more than 8,500 new cases.

Some football schedules have been upended or even canceled due to student-athletes testing positive for the coronavirus.

Medical experts say contact sports could present a serious risk of COVID-19 transmission.

The MHSAA said safety is a top priority for student-athletes and they would reevaluate their decision if guidelines are changed by state health officials.

"Fans will have to sit in a confined area," Johnson said. "The next set of fans that come in will be in a different part of that same side of the stadium."
