DETROIT — Jon Merrill grew up in Michigan, was an on-ice flag-bearer for a Red Wings playoff game, and dreamed of playing for Detroit.
"It feels like it's gonna be my first game in the NHL again. It feels like I just made it," he said moments after agreeing to a contract with his favorite team.
The former Devils and Golden Knights defenseman agreed to a one-year contract with Detroit on Friday.
“As a kid, I always told myself if the opportunity to play for the Red Wings ever came up, I would jump at it,” he said. “To see them calling right away, it was an honor and a really easy decision for me."
