FLINT, Mich. (WXYZ) -- Several Michigan State football players joined a group of volunteers to hand out cases of water Friday to residents affected by the water crisis.

The effort was especially important to running back and Flint native Gerald Holmes.

"I've got family here, so when my family's in need, I'm willing to help," said Holmes. "And the city is my family. I'm born and raised here. It hurt to see my city in pain like this."

Former Spartan wide receiver Keith Mumphery, now with the NFL's Houston Texans, returned to join in on Friday's distribution.

"The people in this community, they need our help. I feel like if Spartans can come back and help uplift the spirit of the community, we can help create a big change here."
