Detroit Red Wings legend and former Tampa Bay Lightning GM Steve Yzerman is still under contract with the Lightning for another year, but another team is reportedly looking at him to be their next GM.
According to a report from Sam Carchidi with Philly.com, the Philadelphia Flyers are considering Yzerman as one of the candidates to be their GM.
Dave Scott, the CEO of the Flyers' parent company, confirmed to Philly.com that Yzerman was one of the candidates. According to Philly.com, Scott spent some time in Detroit and got to know Yzerman during his time there. The report does say that Scott isn't confident they can hire Yzerman.
"My sense is he's pretty committed to someday getting back to Detroit. I think his family is still there," Scott told Philly.com. "He really put his roots down there, and Kenny Holland is getting to a point in his life he's probably going to do other things someday."
In September, Yzerman stepped down as Lightning GM to take on an advisory role with the team. In a press conference, he said he moved to a senior advisor role to "spend more time with family."
According to Yzerman, he came to the decision to step down in July. As for how long he will be with the team, Yzerman couldn't comment past this year. He said multiple times that he is committed to the Lightning for the 2018-19 season but wouldn't comment beyond.
During his 7-year tenure at the Lightning GM, Yzerman has five playoff appearances and an appearance in the 2015 Stanley Cup Finals.
Detroit Red Wings fans may think this means Yzerman could come to Detroit following his contract, but the team just signed current GM Ken Holland to a 2-year contract extension in April.
