Pistons look forward after season never really got on track

WXYZ — The Pistons have officially labeled themselves as a team in a rebuild.

That's a different tone from the franchise since the beginning of the season, fresh off a sweep in the first round of the playoffs as the eight seed in the Eastern Conference.

"It's a different approach, one that I've been through before, it's a totally different outlook and I think it's something that fans can get behind," Pistons head coach Dwane Casey said.

Casey said it took five-six years in Toronto before they were ready to compete for a championship, which they won the season after they moved on from Casey.

The Pistons point to the youth on their roster, players like Luke Kennard, Seku Doumbouya, Svi Mykhailiuk and Christian Wood, all are looked at as pieces the franchise can build around, or develop to put them into trade discussions.

The draft is another aspect that Detroit is hoping will benefit them.

The Pistons currently are in line for a top five pick, which can improve depending on how the NBA lottery ping pong balls bounce.

The season started with critical injuries, and ended with the same, so the team was never going to see the envisioned product they had in the preseason.

The NBA Draft is scheduled for October 15th, 2020.
