NEW YORK (WXYZ) -- According to multiple reports, the New York Rangers will sign defenseman Brendan Smith to a four-year contract extension.

Bob McKenzie of TSN reports the deal will be worth a total of approximately $17.4 million.

The Red Wings traded Smith to the Rangers in February. He was in the final year of his contract and set to become a free agent at the conclusion of the 2016-17 season.
