(WXYZ) — The Tigers have found their shortstop for 2019.
Jordy Mercer, who has spent his entire seven-year career with the Pirates, agreed to a one-year deal worth $5.25 million on Wednesday. The contract was reported first by MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.
Mercer is 32 and hit .251 last season in 117 games. A hand injury limited him. He hit six home runs with a .696 OPS.
The Tigers chose not to bring back Jose Iglesias, opening up the starting shortstop job in the midst of the rebuild.
