(WXYZ) — The Rocket Mortgage Classic field continues to grow with just three weeks until the inaugural PGA Tour event in Detroit. On Friday, tournament organizers announced the first four sponsor exemptions for the tournament.
The first exemption goes to Viktor Hovland, a 21-year-old from Norway who was given the 2019 Ben Hogan Award or the nation's best collegiate golfer. He was also the low-amateur at the 2019 Masters Tournament. He played for Oklahoma State and will turn pro later this month, making the event his second PGA Tour event as a pro.
Justin Suh is the second exemption and he just finished up his college career at USC with a T-4 finish ath the NCAA Men's Golf Championship. He made his proessional debut at The Memorial Tournament and his first PGA Tour amateur start at the 2016 U.S. Open.
Matthew Wolff and his unique swing will be at the Rocket Mortgage Classic as the third exemption. The 20-year-old just completed his sophomore year at Oklahoma State and won the 2019 NCAA Men's Golf Championship. He is turning pro and will make the event his second professional start.
Finally, Zach Bauchou, who also played at Oklahoma State, will be the fourth exemption. He had a T-8 finish at the 2019 Men's NCAA Golf Championship
“Our tournament committee approached our player exemption selection process with the notion that we want golf’s future stars to start here at the Rocket Mortgage Classic at Detroit Golf Club,” said Jason Langwell, Executive Director of the Rocket Mortgage Classic. “Our event aims to be Detroit’s grandest summer sporting spectacle, and now our field has a strong combination of the best players from the recently-completed collegiate season with several of the top 30-ranked golfers in the world.”
Those players will join an already stacked field which includes Dustin Johnson, Bubba Watson, Rickie Fowler, Xander Schauffele and many more.
Tickets are still on sale for the event, which takes place at the historic Detroit Golf Club from June 25-30, by visiting RocketMortgageClassic.com.
