(WXYZ) — Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 693rd goal in his NHL career on Wednesday night and passed Detroit Red Wings legend on the league's all-time goal list.
Ovechkin now sits in 9th place, between Yzerman with 692 all-time goals and Mark Messier with 694 goals. Wayne Gretzky still leads the league with 894 goals, followed by Gordie Howe with 801 and Jaromir Jagr with 766.
"You've had a tremendous career to date and it looks like you're still going strong and might play forever. Best of luck and continued success, I've really enjoyed watching you play and fill in the net," Yzerman said.
He added that if Ovechkin ever does pass Gretzky, "after watching your Stanley Cup celebrations, I want to be invited to your party."
After winning the cup in 2018, the Capitals went on to blow up social media with their celebrations. For Ovechkin, it included a keg stand-like drink out of the Stanley Cup, taking it all over Washington DC and swimming in a fountain.
