(WXYZ) — Coney islands are a distinct and treasured Michigan tradition. Whether it's after a late night with friends or a lazy weekend morning, many find it hard to imagine life without their favorite spot.

And when we asked Metro Detroiters to pick the top 7 coney islands, the response was overwhelming. Nearly 35,000 of you cast votes in our online poll.

Here are the top 7 coney islands, according to you.

#7 National Coney Island

Coming in at number 7 is National Coney Island. The chain was founded in 1965 in Roseville and still growing, thanks to a loyal fan base.

Customer Debra wells says she loves National Coney Island.

“Their food is great and they have the best chili.”

#6 Duly's Place - Southwest Detroit

Duly's in Southwest Detroit claims the sixth spot. Duly's was founded in 1921 and still going strong. It's a spot for national foodies, like the late Anthony Bourdain, to visit when they're in town.

#5 American Coney Island , #4 Lafayette Coney Island

Detroit coney island institutions American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island sit side by side on Lafayette street and are side by side in our poll.

American comes in fifth and Lafayette in fourth.

Founded by brothers who were partners, then rivals, Lafayette and American are what many think of when you say "coney island."

#3 Bill's Drive-In - Ypsilanti

Bill's Drive-In in Ypsilanti comes in third. Fans say Bill's is a must visit when you're in the area.

#2 Lipuma's Coney Island - Rochester

Lipuma's Coney Island is a landmark in downtown Rochester. The family-owned business say it's a joint with personality and soul. They want you to come for the coneys and stay for the friends.

#1 Leo's Coney Island

The top spot in our viewer poll goes to Leo's Coney Island.

“I like the food. I like the people and I love the breakfast.”, says customer Dana Bolcer.

Leo's was founded back in 1972 and now has 61 locations across metro Detroit. That means no matter where you are, you are never too far from a Leo's Coney Island.
