(WXYZ) — Dangerous heat is on the way for metro Detroit. It's already feeling hot and humid today, but temperatures will really soar starting Thursday and continuing into the weekend.
- LIST: Cooling centers open across metro Detroit during extreme summer heat
- Be aware of these warning signs for heat-related illnesses
A warm front will sweep through the region late tomorrow and usher in the hottest air of the summer, so far. The real story will be the heat index, which is a "feels like" temperature based on the actual air temperature and humidity.
The combination of both the high heat and excessive humidity will lead to dangerous heat indexes near and over 100° Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
If you know anyone without air conditioning or may need help in the heat, this would be the time to offer assistance.
Remember, the longer the heat lasts, the more dangerous the heat becomes, especially for the very young and elderly.
After about four very hots days, temperatures will finally return to the 80s early next week.
