We're off to a rocky start for the month of April. Average highs are in the low to mid 50s, and some of us may not see the 50s until the middle of the month.
So get ready for some more changes Tuesday. A strengthening low-level jet from the south along with a developing area of low pressure to our west will bring widespread rain across southeastern Michigan. Colder air behind the storm could change the rain to snow Wednesday morning.
Here are the timing and impacts:
Tuesday Morning: A light wintry mix is possible through the morning. A cold breeze from the northeast will drop us to 31° to 33°, so there could be some icy spots for the morning drive.
Tuesday Afternoon: Any wintry mix should turn to all rain as we warm to 40° across southeastern Michigan. We may see some breaks in the showers during the middle of the day.
Northern Michigan will have heavy snow throughout the day.
Tuesday Evening: Heavier and more widespread rain is likely after 4pm. We may get some strong thunderstorms embedded in the rain; with gusts over 40 mph and small hail possible. The warmest part of the day could be around or after sunset.
Wednesday Morning: Snow showers possible throughout the morning. Totals will likely be around 1 inch or less.
Wednesday Afternoon: Windy and cold with decreasing clouds.
The Storm Prediction Center has put southeastern Michigan under a "marginal risk" area for severe storms Tuesday evening. While the higher risk area is south of Michigan, still be prepared for heavy rain and strong wind gusts Tuesday evening.
