SHELBY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WXYZ) — A family-owned book store in Shelby Township says the hardest part of reopening is spreading the word that people can now shop in person.
“The people that know we are open are really happy that we have opened back up, we are just trying to get everybody to notice that we are open,” said owner of BYOB, Bring Your Old Books.
Ryan Phillips and his mother started BYOB, Bring Your Old Books back in 2011. They are known for their wide variety of books, especially comic books.
“We carry comics all the way back to the 40s and 50s, so we have a lot of rare things that you don’t come across too often,” said Phillips.
Some things are changing to make sure people are kept nice and healthy, including a temporary suspension of their book buyback program. Phillips hopes to have that up and running again by the end of June.
The book store has a sanitation station in place. Located on top of cubbies meant for customers who prefer curbside pickup.
Phillips says even if his regular customers do not have the cash to spend, he just wants to see them again.
“For us personally, we just like you to come in and say 'hi', I’ve had customers for 10 years I haven’t seen them, a lot of them for about two months, just wanted them to come in and say 'hi' I know money is tight right now just want to see everybody and know that they are okay,” said Phillips.
Phillips says he will be offering special appointments for those in higher at risk groups for coronavirus, including seniors and those with auto-immune diseases.
You can call ahead and make an appointment to have the shop to yourself.
